Atelier gets the cover!
San Jose's hottest new fashion magazine, Scene, recently launched its debut issue, with Atelier's hair and makeup artistry on the cover. With hair by Karie Bennett and Kaila Blake, and makeup by Elizabeth Bozzo, the Look agency models were rocking Old Hollywood glamour mixed with a modern yet retro feel.

Courting the Recessionista
Published: July 14, 2009
By Stacey Soble, Salon Today Magazine
Sometimes a clever word phrase can spawn a whole new marketing campaign. Earlier this year, Karie Bennett, owner of Atelier SalonSpa, in San Jose, California, ran across the description of a recessionista in an online fashion magazine:
“A recessionista is a person who is able to find a great deal while still managing to look stylish. A recessionista is that modern marvel who is a magnet for a good deal. And in this economy, she’s got a lot to teach us.”
Bennett took the phrase and made it her own. If she has more than six appointments open on one day, she’ll send an early morning Recessionista e-blast to her client base offering 20-percent off same-day appointments.
“It’s hugely popular,” says Bennett. “I’ll send them out at 8 a.m. and by noon the appointments will be booked. But I only do it every few weeks, and I do it sporadically because I don’t want clients to stop pre-booking.”
For her part, Bennett says she’s just helping out clients who are in a tough spot in this economy without giving away services. “Getting an upscale service at an upscale salon for a discounted price is like finding a Louis Vuitton in a consignment store.”

Changes in hairstyles this summer

How to make a poufy ponytail, steps one through three:

Step one:
Start with dry hair. A little curl or texture will help hold the "pouf" and the ponytail in place.

Step two: Section off hair and use a clip to keep it in place while you work on the area that will form the height below the crown.

Step three: The perfect poufy ponytail should have height at the right spot just below the top of your head. Secure in a low ponytail at the base of your head. Hide the elastic by wrapping hair from the bottom of the ponytail around the band and securing with a hidden bobby pin. photo by Mario Sevilla -- Mercury News
Carefree summer, carefree hair used to be an expected and welcome cliché.
This season, though, there's been a change.
The downturn has altered moods as well as the way women have customarily spent on their hair care. To save money, clients are stretching their appointments by a week or more and bypassing expensive salon products, stylists say. In order to extend the life of their cuts, they're choosing styles and coloring methods that require less maintenance.
And women looking for jobs and those with iffy employment situations are opting for conservative hairstyles, perhaps more befitting of the times.
"Summer was when you saw lots of messy texture and less precision in a cut," says Karie Bennett, founder and master stylist of Atelier Aveda SalonSpa at Santana Row. Recently, she's noticed that clients want less beach bohemian and more city sophisticated when it comes to their summer locks.
"It used to be a more casual season," says celebrity stylist Luke O'Connor, owner of LuKaRo Salon in Beverly Hills and a consultant for Suave. "But this summer, we're seeing more mid-length cuts that tend to be more versatile and sleek."
Rather than conform to current hair trends that often require manipulating hair into the desired style, women are more willing to work with their natural hair texture, letting curls be curly and straight hair stay straight, says O'Connor, whose clients include Debra Messing, Julia Louis-Dreyfus,
This shift toward simplicity works with current worries about the economy, says Philip Pelusi, celebrity hairstylist, hair product developer and owner of Tela Design Studio in New York City.
"It's great, because you don't have to fight your hair's natural tendencies anymore," says Pelusi, whose clients include Diane Lane and Jennifer Lopez. "With the right cut and right products, you can go up to three months between appointments."

Survival Tips for Champagne Hair on a Beer Budget
In the ideal world of our recent past, scheduling hair appointments was part of our personal maintenance. But the current economic status may make it difficult to plan ahead.
Atelier understands this and has a few tips to keep styles fresh and fabulous
without breaking the bank.
A much better alternative to just not doing anything at all!
Try an Express Service
In between color appointments, what really bothers us are the roots, right? And they show up right along the part and around the hairline. Atelier has created new Express Services to help keep you looking your best!
.
- Our Mini-lite service just puts a couple of foil highlights along the part on top and one each on the sides, as well as one on the crown. Same goes for our Mini-touchup: Just the front hairline and the part for less cost. Why should stretching a dollar look less than fabulous? Express services are a la carte, and blowouts are not included.
- Bangs require maintenance, so if they are brow-skimmers, just come in for a low-cost bang trim between full haircuts. We will also blend them into the rest of the cut at no additional charge.
- Nothing feels and looks better than a great salon conditioning treatment and blow-out. If you can't get away on an out-of-town vacation, you can pamper yourself and have a "feel good" splurge with one of our relaxing and refreshing blowouts. Starting with an aromatherapy "Moment of Wellness", we'll take you through a shampoo experience, (there's nothing like having someone else do the scrubbin'!) including a botanical hair treatment, and then one of our expert hair artists will create perfection with a brush, blowdryer and the right combination of Aveda hair styling products for your desired look.
Although not exactly the same, you can do-it-yourself with one of Aveda's hair care systems:
- Dry Remedy for Thirsty hair
- Damage Remedy for Over-processed hair
- Color Conserve Strengthening for Delicate color-treated hair

Perfecting Plant Peel™ Facts

- Maximum exfoliation with zero irritation.
.
- Equivalent to a 30% glycolic peel in exfoliation, without the risk of inflammation, painful stinging, redness and abrasions.

.
- Perfecting Plant Peel™ is a creamy thermal masque that is used with an activating spray. Magnesium sulfate (epsom salt) is the ingredient that creates this warming sensation. The activating spray contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatories, such as organic aloe vera and Argan leaf extract, to calm the skin and prevent redness and irritation.
.
- This peel is appropriate for all skin types. The ideal guest is one that seeks maximum exfoliation, increased hydration, diminished lines and wrinkles and refined pores.
.
- Cost: $75 as a stand-alone 30 minute service, $60 as an add-on to our Green Science Anti-Aging facial. Compare to the cost of a Glycolic Peel at $150-$200.
