In honor of earth day, Aveda has set aside a whole month to love, celebrate and raise monies to protect the earth and its people. we’ve raised over $22 million since 1999. over the last 5 years $16 million of the funds supported clean water projects at home and around the world.

Atelier Salonspa and Atelier Studio are doing their part to help with a fundraising campaign designed to make it easy for you to get involved.

The first way: Make a $12 donation to the Global Greengrants fund and receive a FREE organic lavender Light the Way candle.

Second: While you’re having a wonderful hair service, you can text a $5 donation to the number on the mirror signage, or purchase raffle tickets with cash or check made out to the Clean Water Fund. Show us your text and receive a raffle ticket to have a chance to win some amazing gift baskets, and take a guess at how many plastic caps are in our recycling jar and win an Atelier gift card!

Third: Aveda and the Bay Area Aveda Salon Network will host a Catwalk for Water ‘Trashion’ Show with a goal of raising $67,000 to benefit the Clean Water Fund and the League to Save Lake Tahoe. Local salons will create a look made from trash and other eco-friendly/recycled materials, complete with runway hair, makeup and styling. Atelier will enter two models and will have one minute to showcase their look, concept and materials on stage during the show. A panel of judges will vote for Best Hair and Makeup, Best “Trashion” Outfit and Best Overall Look at the end of the night.

The event is open to the public! To purchase tickets call Aveda at 1-800-283-3244. Tickets are $30 per person for 21 years old or older. When placing your ticket order, let them know you are supporting Atelier!

Atelier’s answer: Jon, We’re big fans of getting more for our money, and you probably are too. See an experienced stylist for a good cut (precision cuts last longer) and take advantage of their knowledge by asking them for a styling lesson. This is valuable one-on-one time that will really give you the step-by-step on how to look your best. Salon products stretch your dollar because you use less to get a better look. Call and set up an appointment, like you would with your dentist–you’ll have a better selection of appointment times and stylists.

We look forward to seeing you at Atelier soon!

We asked Atelier’s Aveda-certified esthetician Rebecca Chewning why regular therapeutic skin care is important:

Your skin is the largest organ in the body and it is also the last to get any nutrients from the food you ingest. So it’s crucial to maintain a healthy, well-balanced diet and engage in relaxing activities to reduce the stressor hormone levels in your body. We generally spend our attention on having nice clothes, going to get our nails done or getting that new designer purse, but we neglect the one thing that everyone notices, and looks directly at in any human interaction: our face, and more specifically, our skin. At Atelier, we believe that having beautiful skin is the ultimate cosmetic. People instantly notice and are quick to compliment great-looking skin. Make it a priority in your schedule and in your budget to get that facial or massage. It’s the best investment you can make. Of course, we get an instant gratification from buying a new pair of shoes, however, the overall skin benefit and relaxation that you receive from getting a facial is a so much more gratifying and will last you much longer.

The California lifestyle has always been one of a laid-back stereotype, but it seems that lately, we’ve become more accustomed to a higher-stress, faster paced way of life. When people come to Aveda for a facial, it is not just about rubbing lotions on the skin, but it is about taking some “me time” out of your busy schedule. An Aveda facial utilizes the incredible stress-relieving benefits of essential oils and aromatherapy to stimulate the ‘feel-good’ chemicals produced by the brain. Our guests find themselves dozing off because of the relaxing effects of the aromas. What a compliment! At Atelier, it’s all about treating our guests as unique individuals with unique needs. Every facial is customized to your specific needs. And, we never leave the room while your masque is on, we use that time to further make your experience special, by adding hand and foot treatments to really pamper you from head to toe.

Taking some time for yourself to rest, relax, and recharge helps you to be 100% for everyone else.

As a lifelong sufferer of the curly hair affliction, I understand where you’re coming from. I’ve been where you are. And it was a dark place. But I have answers, solutions, and a guiding light to help you see your curls as beautiful.

First, curly hair is different from straight. There are hard and fast rules.
Some are just my opinion, some have been passed down from generation to generation. So here’s the first one: never brush curly hair. This is true. Unless, of course, you love that big, bushy, frizzy, ‘Roseanne Roseannadanna’ look. The only time you should EVER brush curly hair is before you wash it. And be sure to use a brush with rounded tips, and get those right on the scalp. We curly folks don’t get much scalp stimulation, so we need to brush down on it to loosen the old skin and bring blood up to the surface of the scalp, which feeds the follicles to continue to grow a healthy crop of curls.

Once in the shower, wash and condition with products designed for curly hair, like AVEDA’s Be Curly line, or their Dry Remedy line, both of which provide lots of moisture to our drier-than-average hair. Use a wide tooth comb to get the tangles out during the conditioning.

Leave the conditioner in for a minute or two, or even five, if you feel the need. Then rinse for a minute. Now here’s where this gets interesting. Keep some light gel and leave-in conditioner on the floor of your shower or on the ledge of your tub, where you can reach it easily. I use the Aveda Curl-prep and Aveda Confixor. Bend from the waist, flipping your hair upside down. Use two or three pumps of the Curl-prep, and add a quarter-size puddle of the Confixor, mix in your hand. Now, apply from ends to roots. Yes, that is backwards from what you usually do, but you want most of the goodies on the ends. Now squish it through, closing your fists on the curls, and squeeze out the excess. Wrap your hair in a towel and exit the shower. Let some of the water absorb into the towel. When you’re ready to dry your hair, unwrap the towel and get your blowdryer and diffuser attachment on and ready, and start from the back and work your way to the top. Again, flipping your hair over is a good way to access the top. You’ll need some practice to find the way that works best for you, but this technique will keep your curls from frizzing and they will also stay intact and spiral beautifully.

Most of us curly folks already know that natural curls are not too consistent. Some go north, some go west. So if you want to change direction of some of your wayward ringlets, wrap it around your finger the way you want it to go, and aim the diffuser at it on a high heat, low air velocity setting for a few seconds, then take away the dryer and let it cool down on your finger. Unwrap and there you have it! A bouncing and behaving curl.

Curly hair doesn’t like mornings. It tends to be quite tangly and while you slept, it got involved with your pillowcase’s cotton threads and turned into a cotton ball. Here are some tips to avoid this phenomenon: Prior to hitting the hay (sorry, that’s an unfortunate pun in a curly hair article), gently pull your hair into a loose ponytail on top of your head. Even if your hair is bob-length, the longest parts will reach into the soft elastic, and you’ll avoid most of that pillowcase involvement. Then in the morning, just mist your hair with a curl activator spray, like the Aveda Damage Control or add some of the Curl-prep to a spray bottle of water and use that.

Washing every other day is a good idea, since the negotiation process tends to be a bit lengthy. It’s funny how people associate curls with ‘wash and wear’ hair. There is nothing easy about my hair, I need four products and fifteen minutes to wrangle it down to a dull roar instead of the lion’s mane it wants to be.

I hope this gives you some illumination on how to deal with your own curls. Email me if you have any other questions, I’m happy to help!

Are you suffering from frizzy, flyaway or dull hair? Wondering how flat irons work? How much should you spend on one? Will it damage my hair? You have questions, I have some answers. My name is Amber, I’m an Atelier Artist and the flat iron is my favorite styling tool.

The ceramic flat iron is a wonderful little technological marvel that combines electrical, thermal, and mechanical forces to help straighten and smooth hair. Whether you want straight and sleek, smooth and full, or even bouncy spiral barrel curls, let me tell you how you can have it all.

I’ve recently fallen in love with one of the most versatile tools in my industry: the flat iron. Don’t get me wrong, I love big, sexy, fluffy hair but I believe if the flatiron is used correctly in conjunction with the right products, you can have the best of both worlds; smooth and voluminous. But that’s not all this little tool can achieve.

Hair in its natural state is holds a positive static charge, which causes flyaways. A 100% ceramic flatiron (not just ceramic plated) holds a negative electrical charge (also known as negative ions). The positive and negative charges counteract each other causing the hair to lay flat.

Thermal forces also help to straighten and smooth the hair as well. The heat of the flat iron causes the protein bonds in the hair to temporarily restructure and straighten as the two plates of the flat iron is pressed and pulled through the hair. The flat iron is different from the curling iron in that it has two ceramic plates that are sources for heat whereas with a curling iron the only source of heat is the barrel. So, with two sources of heat as opposed to one, the hair is bound to be smoother and less frizzy with the flat iron.

Mechanical forces also help the hair to lay flat and smooth. The outer layer of a healthy hair strand (called the cuticle layer) normally lays flat like shingles on a roof, but if the hair has been colored or chemically treated too many times, the hair can look dull and frizzy due to the damaged outer layer. Curly or textured hair has an undulating surface, which, again, causes the cuticle layer to not lay flat. When you press the two plates of the flat iron together, the cuticle behaves itself and lies down flat, which will in turn reflect the light better, causing the hair to appear shinier and healthier.

Another wonderful little trick you can perform with the flat iron is to make beautiful shiny ribbon curls. Using the right combination of iron position and styling products, you can create luscious waves and curls with the twist of the wrist. And, you receive a smoother shiner look than using a curling iron because of the flat iron’s double heat source.

So, how much does this miraculous little tool cost? Flat irons range from as little as $15 to over $200. There are hundreds of models and brands on the market to choose from and people always ask me if cost makes a difference. My answer is the same; it’s an investment. You can buy a budget model, but it may not have 100% ceramic plates, which can mean an uneven heating element, resulting in more damage to the hair. You’ll probably have to replace the iron more often as well. I have had the same $150 professional flat iron for over five years now, and it’s been well worth the money. In the end it’s a decision you’ll have to make based on your budget and hair care needs.

The flat iron has so much to offer the world of hair care and styling. With all of its versatility and benefits I hope you’re able to get your hands on one soon. I’m happy to help you with a professional styling lesson at Atelier Salonspa in Santana Row. Our salon offers many services ranging from blowouts and flat iron services to Keratin Complex Smoothing treatments, which give you smoother, less frizzy hair for months instead of days. My only goal is to give you the hair of your dreams. And did I mention that I LOVE flat ironing hair?
