Atelier's participation in donating hair clippings to an organization that turns hair into oil-absorbing mats garners local attention from the San Jose Mercury News, as well as NBC television.  NBC comes out to film our hair collection in action, and the story goes national!  Atelier sparks a countrywide effort by salons to keep the collection going.  matteroftrust.org stitches the hair into mats which helped soak up the oil spill in the San Francisco Bay.

A Santana Row salon owner is doing her part to help clean up San Francisco Bay - with hair.

Owner Karie Bennett and her staff at Atelier SalonSpa and Atelier Studio have been collecting hair clippings and shipping them to Matter of Trust, which turns them into "hair mats" that are used to soak up oil spills like the one last month that fouled the bay with 58,000 gallons of bunker fuel.

"When we found out that something we are just throwing away every day could make such a big difference in that environment, we went into action right away," Bennett said. "We love telling our guests that they are also helping to clean up the oil spill, just by having their hair cut. One of our guests even asked us how many inches will it take to save a bird!"

When the most recent spill is history, Bennett says they'll still donate the clippings because "unfortunately, there always seems to be some mess somewhere."

Atelier has just received word that they have been named to the very prestigious Salon Today Top 200 for the 3rd year in a row! This award recognizes the Top 200 fastest-growing salons in North America. This recognition is a testament to the wonderful team of talent and heart at Atelier.
